The Difference Between a Pony and a Horse
Ponies and horses belong to the same species, Equus caballus. A pony is not a baby horse, and it will never grow into one.
Only one criterion separates them officially: height at the withers. Up to 148 cm unshod, the animal is a pony. Above that, it is a horse. Everything else, from build and temperament to feeding and lifespan, follows very strong tendencies but is not part of the definition.
